Brief Paeony Care Guide

Planting:
  • The best time to plant your peonies is between April and July when they are dormant.
  • Peonies prefer full sun if possible, free-draining soil (they do not like wet feet). They also enjoy a frost in winter!
  • Allow up to 1㎡ space when fully grown (~3yrs)
  • When planting, you want to place the plant angled diagonally downwards. You want to cover the highest eye (this will look like a coloured point, or spear) with no more than 5cm of dirt. Bury them too deep and they will have difficulty growing.

Care:
  • General garden fertiliser may improve colour and size of blooms (no excessive nitrogen)
  • Potato fertiliser high in phosphate/potassium but low in nitrogen is very good.
  • It is a good idea to keep the area around your peony plant clear of weeds and other plants, as they can sulk when they have too much competition.
Blooms:
  • Don't be alarmed if your peony plant starts to die down and wilt around february. This is normal! Peonies are perennial, so they die down in early autumn and pop up through the ground again in spring, flowering from late october-early december.
  • Don’t expect much in the first year, they may only produce one or two flowers. They will produce more flowers in the following years.
  • Never cut foliage down after blooming, leave until it turns colour in autumn. Cutting down to ground level and removing foliage may prevent carry-over of fungal infection.
